The annual Cobra Gold joint military exercises with the United States
and Singapore will this year include for the first time training in
preparedness for nuclear, chemical and biological terrorist attacks.

Maj-Gen Piyasak Desaputra, director of joint and combined exercises,
said Cobra Gold 2002 would involve drills for nuclear, chemical and
biological attacks, including training in the evacuation of civilians.

Col Barry M Shapiro, chief of the Joint US Military Advisory Group to
Thailand, said training would also be provided on how to deal with
nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, including anthrax.
According to a source, troops would also receive training in strategies
to attack terrorist bases and rescue hostages, as well as
intelligence-gathering techniques.

A total of 13,200 US troops, 550 of them from specialist units, would
join Cobra Gold 2002, more than double the number of those who attended
last year's exercise.
A total of 73 US aircraft and six navy vessels were also expected.

The Thai military would provide 7,700 soldiers, 32 aircraft and 11 navy
vessels.
The exercises will be launched on May 14 at U-Tapao airbase in Rayong
and end on May 28
